She’s what’s enticing about videogame and pop cultural figureheads larger-than-life, confident, funny, and memorably weird-looking. Many have highlighted her sultry, femme fatale qualities but you can essentially do as much justice to her by imagining a sort of lanky, Sarah Palin-faced sex kitten if she were played by Brandon Lee in The Crow. However, even with a nonsense storyline hammed up to extreme for fans of this genre, these elements are completely secondary next to the adrenaline fuelled gameplay.Ĭoming straight out of the Lara Croft School of Incredibly Fit and Lethal Female Leads, Bayonetta the character is stretched to her most fun, cartoonish and indulgent conclusion. The mind boggles, but to be fair, this confusion is largely a staple of the genre and worth pointing out if only because it's one of the exceptionally few elements that isn’t as easily accessible and streamlined as the rest of Bayonetta. Then there’s the subplot about the persistent journalist from another dimension. She becomes part of a motley crew involving a supernatural bar-owner and an informant played by Joe Pesci’s doppelganger, and continues fighting angels to keep herself from being dragged to Inferno: a Hell-dimension with a partial relation to Dante’s Divine Comedy. When she wakes up she’s lost her memory but still retains her witch powers. It’s that perfect marriage of theatrical action and sleekly precise character design, all tied together with numerous references to the history of video games.īayonetta is the story of a leggy witch at war with a rival clan, who unfortunately at some point gets stuck at the bottom of a lake for a few centuries. Bayonetta is brilliant likely one of the best examples of a videogame that brings its own genre to the very top of its game. It’s the same coming-of-age tale that’s been repeated for aeons.īayonetta is two things. If they'd just make a regular console for once, instead of doing gimmicks, they could really wow people with presentation, without even changing the price. You know that age old story: Girl wakes up after 500 years at the bottom of a lake girl punches angels repeatedly in the face. Nintendo has the capacity to really wow people with good graphics because of their art style. I'm hardly interested in Zelda-BoTW because it's not that same style I wanted with Zelda 2011. And Zelda 2011, one of the reasons I bought a Wii U- they'd be able to keep that type of art style for the game. I mean can you imagine how Mario Kart 8 would have looked and played had they had 6 times the power like a PS4 level console? Super Smash Bros with Pixar level graphics? The 60 fps on Mario 3D World would have had looked better because they would have been able to master motion blur, instead of the gamey looking 60fps it currently has. I mean at $349 they were $50 off from being PS4-level which would make for some pretty awesome graphics on Nintendo games, something that would wow consumers with near-pixar level graphics and even compete with PS4-Pro and Scorpio because of that. I even bought a Wii U at launch and wasn't that disappointed when I lost it a year or two later(in storage when I didn't have money to pay for storage while I was homeless). Wii U could have had all of this without changing the price had it not been for the touchpad controller. 720p is very jaggy from what I've seen, and better texture quality along with more detail. What I mean is overall better image quality, the crowds looking more realistic for instance.
